Former Carolina Panthers free safety Mike Mitchell is officially moving to Pittsburgh.

The Steelers announced Wednesday that Mitchell signed a five-year contracts. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The free agent had said Tuesday afternoon via Twitter that he had agreed to contract terms with the Steelers.

“Pittsburgh!!!!!! First I have to thank God for this blessing and Mr. Rooney and the Steelers organization for such a great opportunity!” Mitchell said.

Mitchell began his career in Oakland after signing with the Raiders as a second-round draft pick in 2009. He started nine games in four seasons with the Raiders.

In his first season with the Panthers last year, he started 14 games and had a career-best four interceptions, 66 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and eight passes defensed.

The 26-year-old is expected to contend with Shamarko Thomas, a third-round pick in 2013, for a starting safety job next to veteran Troy Polamalu. If Mitchell takes the job, he would replace veteran free-agent Ryan Clark.
