Former Carolina Panthers free safety Mike Mitchell is moving to Pittsburgh.
The free agent announced Tuesday afternoon via Twitter that he had agreed to contract terms with the Steelers.
“Pittsburgh!!!!!! First I have to thank God for this blessing and Mr. Rooney and the Steelers organization for such a great opportunity!” Mitchell said.
Mitchell began his career in Oakland after signing with the Raiders as a second-round draft pick in 2009. He started nine games in four seasons with the Raiders.
In his first season with the Panthers last year, he started 15 games and had a career-best four interceptions, 66 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and eight passes defensed.
The 26-year-old is expected to contend with Shamarko Thomas, a third-round pick in 2013, for a starting safety job next to veteran Troy Polamalu. If Mitchell takes the job, he would replace veteran free-agent Ryan Clark.
