Before this season, Fresno State had not been a conference champion in 13 years.
Quarterback Derek Carr and his Bulldog teammates took care of that on Saturday.
Playing at home against Air Force, the junior signal caller completed 28 of 32 passes, connecting on 87.5 percent of his throws, for 452 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. The 48-15 victory earned Fresno State a share of the Mountain West championship in its first year in the league.
The win gave the Bulldogs a 9-3 overall record, a remarkable turnaround from the 4-9 mark a year ago. Carr has played a significant role in that success. He ends the regular season with three 400-plus yard passing games, including 527 yards in a win over conference co-champion San Diego State. He has thrown for 3,746 passing yards and 36 touchdowns with only five interceptions.
For his performance against Air Force, Carr has been named the NRA/Lindy’s Gunslinger of the Week.
Throughout the 2012 season, the top passing performance in college football each week will be honored with this recognition from the National Rifle Association and Lindy’s Sports. At the end of the season, the NRA/Lindy’s National Gunslinger of the Year will be named.
