Ex-NBA player Crittenton takes plea in murder case

Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton pleaded guilty to manslaughter Wednesday in the 2011 shooting death of an Atlanta woman.

Crittenton, 27, was sentenced to serve 23 years in prison.

Crittenton pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a weapon and aggravated assault with a firearm. Prosecutors dropped the murder charge he had faced with the plea agreement.

Crittenton was involved in two August 2011 Atlanta-area shootings, the second of which left 22-year-old Julian Jones, a mother of four, dead. According to prosecutors, Crittenton was aiming for the man who allegedly robbed him days earlier when he shot Jones.

Jury selection for Crittenton’s murder trial wrapped up Tuesday. Opening arguments were scheduled to begin Wednesday before Crittenton decided to plead guilty.

Crittenton played with the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies and Washington Wizards during his two-year career.
