Shelby Miller’s first season with the Arizona Diamondbacks has been a disaster and it will continue in the minor leagues.
The Diamondbacks announced Thursday that Miller was optioned to Triple-A Reno.
Miller was obtained from the Atlanta Braves for center fielder Ender Inciarte, first-round picks Aaron Blair and Dansby Swanson and was expected to form an effective combination with free agent Zack Greinke.
Miller was obtained after posting a 3.02 ERA in 33 starts despite having a 6-17 record for the Braves. This year, he is 2-9 with a 7.14 ERA in 14 starts and has allowed 87 hits in 69 1/3 innings. His ERA is the third highest among starting pitchers with at least 60 innings.
Miller missed time with a sprained right index finger but has been ineffective since returning. He has a 7.23 ERA in his last four starts.
The Diamondbacks will make a corresponding move before Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
