PHOENIX — Bonus baseball brings out the best in the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Aaron Hill’s single to deep left field drove in the winning run in the 10th inning, and the Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 10-9 Tuesday for their major-league-high 15th extra-inning victory.
“We’re here. Might as well do what we can do,” Hill said of the extra work.
Gerardo Parra homered and drove in a career-high five runs, and Martin Prado continued his August assault with three RBIs as the D-backs earned their big-league-high 28th one-run win with their 38th comeback victory.
“As long as they are comeback victories, that’s fine,” Hill said, emphasizing the word “victories.”
Adam Eaton and Paul Goldschmidt singled to left field to open the 10th inning off Dale Thayer (2-4), and Eaton took third on Prado’s fly to right-center field. After Goldschmidt took second on defensive indifference, the Padres went to a five-man infield against Hill, who lined a ball over the left fielder’s head.
Heath Bell (5-2) pitched a 1-2-3 10th as the D-backs (68-63) won for the third time in four games. Five of their last eight victories have come in extra innings, including a 12-7, 18-inning triumph in Philadelphia last Saturday that took seven hours, six minutes.
“It’s fun,” Bell said. “It’s almost like the playoffs. Every inning in an extra-inning game means a whole lot.”
Parra hit a three-run home in the second inning and a two-run single in the fifth as the D-backs took a 6-3 lead. The advantage grew to 7-3 when Prado walked with the bases loaded in the sixth.
However, the Padres rallied in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game as the D-backs blew save chances in each inning. They lead the majors with 26 blown saves.
In the eighth, Ronny Cedeno singled home two runs, and Mark Kotsay and Jedd Gyorko added run-scoring singles to tie the score at 7.
Prado hit a two-run double into the left field corner to give the D-backs a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the eighth. He leads the major leagues with 38 hits in August, and he leads the NL with 30 RBIs this month.
San Diego pulled even again in the ninth. Yonder Alonso singled to open the inning off closer Brad Ziegler, and Jesus Guzman walked. Nick Hundley singled to left to drive in one run, and Cedeno beat out a bunt toward first base, leveling the game at 9.
“Every game is different,” San Diego manager Bud Black said. “This game is played by human beings, and you never know how the game is going to play out. That game today is a testament of that.”
The D-backs spoiled the return of Ian Kennedy, who was their Opening Day starter the last three seasons before being dealt to the Padres at the July 31 trade deadline. Kennedy gave up six runs on six hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.
“It was difficult,” Kennedy said. “I knew it was going to be little different than normal games. You can never really prepare yourself for something like that. I just put myself in holes. I did it to myself. I didn’t make pitches, put a lot of guys on, walked a lot of guys.”
Paul Goldschmidt hit a run-scoring doubled in the fifth inning to improve his RBI total to an NL-high 104. He also walked three times.
Will Venable had three hits and an RBI and scored a run for the Padres (59-73), who have lost five of their last eight. Venable has 37 hits in August.
Arizona left-hander David Holmberg had a rocky start in his major league debut, giving up hits to the first four batters he faced in a three-run first inning. Gyorko and Chase Headley had RBI singles, and Nick Hundley drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
Parra’s homer tied it in the second.
Holmberg allowed three runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
NOTES: Headley was replaced by PH Alexi Amarista in the fifth inning, leaving the game due to back spasms. … Arizona OF Jason Kubel was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Holmberg, whose contract was purchased from Double-A Mobile. Kubel, who was hitting .220 with five homers and 32 RBIs in 241 at-bats, had nine hits in his last 75 at-bats. The D-backs have 10 days to waive, trade or release Kubel. … San Diego announced that LHP Robbie Erlin will be recalled from Triple-A Tucson to start the final game of the series Wednesday. The Padres will make a corresponding roster move Wednesday.
