Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro’s return to action has been delayed because of fluid in his leg from a hamstring injury, and now there is no timetable for when he might be ready to play, ESPNChicago.com reported Friday.

When Castro suffered his hamstring injury on March 2, the Cubs said Castro would be out of the lineup for seven to 10 days.

On Friday morning, however, manager Rick Renteria said it will be longer than that and did not know how long Castro will be sidelined.

“I don’t have a set date in my head right now,” Renteria said, according to ESPNChicago.com. “That’s all based on how he’s progressing. He’s progressing well.”

Renteria said Castro would not play before Monday, and Castro said it could be another week before he returns.

Castro said he’s running at only “40 percent.”

“I don’t want to rush myself,” Castro said. “If I can play in 10-12 games in spring training I think I’ll be good for the season.”

The Cubs play their first regular-season game in 16 days.
