PHOENIX — Anthony Rizzo had three hits, including a homer, and tied a career high with six RBIs in the Chicago Cubs’ 14-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday at Chase Field.
Dexter Fowler and Addison Russell added two hits and two RBIs apiece for Chicago (3-0).
Rizzo’s two-run triple broke a 6-6 tie in a five-run fourth inning as the Cubs overcame a three-run deficit to help free agent signee right-hander John Lackey earn the win.
Rizzo, who hit a three-run homer in a four-run ninth inning, reached base five times. He finished a double short of the cycle, and he walked and was hit by a pitch.
Arizona second baseman Jean Segura became the eighth player in major league history to hit a leadoff homer in the first inning and have an inside-the-park homer later in the same game.
Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber sprained his left ankle injury when he collided with center fielder Fowler while chasing Segura’s inside-the-park homer in the second inning. X-rays on Schwarber’s ankle were negative, the Cubs said, but an MRI exam is scheduled for Friday.
Kris Bryant had three hits, and Rizzo, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist each scored three times as the Cubs took advantage of two Arizona errors and 10 walks. The Cubs have scored 29 runs in their first three games.
David Peralta had three extra-base hits and an RBI, and Jake Lamb had two hits and three RBIs for Arizona (1-3). Segura has three homers in four games.
Lackey (1-0) gave up eight hits and six runs in six innings, with four strikeouts and a walk.
Arizona starter Rubby De La Rosa (0-1) gave up seven runs, six earned, in 3 1/3 innings. Diamondbacks starters have given up 23 earned runs in 20 1/3 innings this season.
Segura homered on the first pitch of the last of the first inning and Lamb’s two-out, two-run single gave the Diamondbacks 3-0 lead.
Addison Russell’s two-run single in the second inning off De La Rosa made it 3-2.
Segura’s inside-the-park homer in the second gave Arizona 4-2 lead.
The Cubs tied it 4-4 in the third inning after Heyward singled and Zobrist walked. Rizzo singled in Heyward and tagged up from first on a foul popup behind the plate. Rizzo beat the throw to second, which went into center field as Zobrist scored.
The Diamondbacks took a 6-4 lead in their third when Goldschmidt singled, Peralta tripled and Lamb hit a sacrifice fly.
The Cubs knocked De La Rosa out in a five-run fourth inning when Russell doubled and Fowler had an RBI triple. Rizzo tripled in two runs, another scored on a wild pitch and the last on a throwing error to make it 9-6.
