Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who left Sunday night’s 45-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth quarter with shoulder and neck injuries, is not sure if he will be able to play this week.
Hasselbeck said that he initially got hurt in the first quarter before a third-quarter hit brought the medical staff onto the field.
“I did get X-rays and I’m in a little bit of pain,” Hasselbeck said after the game. “I got hit on the top of the head and kind of just got my head compressed into my neck.”
The 40-year-old Hasselbeck will be further evaluated on Monday and coach Chuck Pagano said, “He should be OK.”
With Andrew Luck still sidelined by a lacerated kidney and shoulder injury, the Colts could be forced to turn to Charlie Whitehurst, who played the final two drives against the Steelers.
After winning his first four starts in 2015, Hasselbeck struggled on Sunday, finishing 16-of-26 passing for 169 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He was sacked twice. Whitehurst was 4-of-8 passing for 51 yards and was sacked three times in his debut with the Colts.
“I’m very disappointed in how I played,” Hasselbeck said. “I wish I could get some plays back. They had me out of sync with dropping eight and rushing three.”
Hasselbeck did not have a definitive answer when asked about possibly missing this week’s trip to Jacksonville to face the Jaguars.
“I don’t know about that yet,” Hasselbeck said. “I would hope that I could (play).”
