The Indianapolis Colts are expected to work out Josh Freeman amid their multiple quarterback injuries.
The Bleacher Report reported that Freeman will be working out for the team on Monday. Freeman, 27, has not taken a snap since 2013. He spent some time with the Miami Dolphins this offseason.
Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has been recovering from a lacerated kidney and a partially torn abdominal muscle he sustained on Nov. 10, and Matt Hasselbeck is nursing a shoulder injury.
Charlie Whitehurst replaced Hasselbeck in Sunday’s 18-12 win but suffered a hamstring injury in the fourth quarter. Whitehurst was able to finish the game, going 9-of-14 passing for 78 yards, but the Colts would be left with Stephen Morris, who was signed off the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad last week.
“The last two weeks, I’d come in and run a few plays, and then it’s like, ‘Hey, Charlie!’ It was like I’d seen a ghost,” Whitehurst said. “Last week (against the Texans), with the hit (Hasselbeck) took, I wasn’t expecting him to come back in. He’s tough. Everybody knows that. But with this (injury) being the right shoulder, I figured he wasn’t coming back.”
The Colts are 7-8 and will play the Tennessee Titans this Sunday, holding on to slim playoff hopes. A Cincinnati Bengals win over the Denver Broncos on Monday night clinches the AFC South for the Houston Texans. If Denver wins Monday, the Texans must win at home against Jacksonville or hope Tennessee beats Indianapolis in Week 17.
Sunday could mark Whitehurst’s first start since Week 17 last season, when he was with the Titans, and just the 10th start of his 10-year NFL career.
“He’s a tough son of a gun and he’s been getting a lot of snaps the last couple of weeks while Matt’s been mending during the week,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Sunday of Whitehurst.
