The Los Angeles Clippers are expected to officially secure Doc Rivers as their next head coach Wednesday, when the former Boston Celtics bench boss will sign a three-year deal worth $21 million.
Citing a source, the Boston Herald reported that Rivers and the Clippers have finally agreed to contract language.
He’ll assume the reigns of a team that hopes to retain superstar Chris Paul and reach the playoffs.
Rivers was expected to fly to Los Angeles Tuesday and sign his name in front of Clippers owner Donald Sterling. The money and length are the same as what had remained on his Celtics contract.
Discussions had slowed over the past few days, while Rivers sought assurances from Sterling, including having the final say on all player decisions.
Rivers leaves a team in decline in Boston for a team on the rise in Los Angeles. They entered the playoffs as the fourth seed, but blew a 2-0 lead and fell to the fifth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies in six games. The team declined to renew coach Vinny Del Negro’s contract last month.
