In need of backup help at point guard while Chris Paul is sidelined with a shoulder injury, the Los Angeles Clippers signed Maalik Wayns to a 10-day contract on Wednesday.
The Clippers decided to bring back Wayns, a former Villanova player, after the team waived him on Monday. He missed the first 33 games of the season with a torn left meniscus.
The 6-foot-2 Wayns will give the Clippers some depth behind Darren Collison, who is starting in place of Paul.
In six games last season with the Clippers, Wayns averaged 3.3 points and 1.2 assists. His NBA experience includes 27 games with the Clippers and the Philadelphia 76ers.
Paul suffered a separated right shoulder in the third quarter of the Clippers’ win over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. The All-Star, who is averaging 19.6 points and an NBA-leading 11.2 assists per game this season, will be sidelined for up to six weeks, but he does not need surgery.
Collison, who started 47 games for the Dallas Mavericks last season, is averaging 8.6 points and 2.2 assists this season for the Clippers.
