Minnesota Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel plans to void the final year of his contract worth $3.7 million, according to a report.
The 31-year-old veteran will test the free-agent market, ESPN 1500 reported, with the uncertainly surrounding his status with the Vikings as new coach Mike Zimmer takes over after Leslie Frazier was fired.
The Vikings ended last season with three quarterbacks — Cassel, Christian Ponder and Josh Freeman — on the roster. Cassel passed for 1,807 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in nine games and had a 81.6 quarterback rating.
NFLDraftScout.com projects that Vikings will select a quarterback, possibly Derek Carr of Fresno State with the No. 8 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, further clouding the picture in Minnesota.
Cassel signed a two-year contract with the Vikings last season with the ability to opt out of the second year of the deal after he came to the team from the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent four seasons.
He still could return to the Vikings. NFL.com reported that Minnesota is interested in keeping him.
Freeman will become a free agent in March.
