St. Louis Cardinals right-handed reliever Seth Maness was placed on the disabled list with a right elbow strain.

The move, retroactive to August 14, was balanced with the Cardinals recalling right-handed pitcher Sam Tuivailala from Triple-A Memphis.

Maness became the 12th player to hit the disabled list for the Cardinals since July 1.

Maness was on the disabled list from May 13-June 18 with right elbow inflammation. He is 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 29 relief appearances (31 2/3 innings).

He had a career-best 14 1/3 scoreless inning streak over 11 appearances from July 9 to August 12.

Tuivailala is joining the Cardinals for the second time this season.

He allowed three runs in three innings with three strikeouts in four relief appearances in a 23-day tour with the Cardinals in July.

The 23-year-old Tuivailala is 3-2 with a 5.44 ERA in 39 games for Memphis, striking out 66 with 19 walks. He has 17 saves this season, which is third in the Pacific Coast League.
