ST. LOUIS — All-Star second baseman Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals left Wednesday night’s game with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the bottom of the third inning after suffering an apparent injury.
Carpenter took a half-swing on a 3-1 pitch from Jeff Locke and came up wincing, walking out of the batter’s box. After consulting with manager Mike Matheny and a member of the team’s training staff, Carpenter walked off the field.
He was replaced by Kolten Wong, who flied out to center field on the next pitch. Carpenter entered the game batting .299 with 14 homers and 53 RBIs, and on Tuesday night was picked to the National League All-Star team for the third time.
At the time of Carpenter’s departure, St. Louis trailed Pittsburgh 1-0.
