St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Tyler Lyons was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained shoulder.
Lyons was roughed up for nine runs on Monday night in a loss to the Chicago Cubs.
In April, Lyons took the place of injured right-hander Joe Kelly (hamstring) in the Cardinals’ rotation.
Since Lyons’ call-up from Triple-A in April, he is 0-3 with a 6.12 ERA in six games, including four starts.
To replace the 26-year-old Lyons on the roster, the Cardinals recalled Sam Freeman and Jorge Rondon and also optioned Eric Fornataro to Triple-A Memphis.
Freeman had a 3.78 ERA in 13 games for Memphis. The 26-year-old has pitched in 37 games for the Cardinals during the past two seasons.
Rondon, 26, is making his first trip to the major leagues. The right-hander has a 2.51 ERA for Memphis this season.
The two pitchers were expected to join the Cardinals before their game on Tuesday night against the Cubs in St. Louis.
