The Miami Marlins agreed to a contract with catcher Miguel Olivo late Thursday, according to multiple reports.
Olivo was told Tuesday by the Cincinnati Reds that he would not make their Opening Day roster after Devon Mesoraco was given the backup job. The Reds asked Olivo to take a $100,000 bonus to go to triple-A Louisville, but he refused and the Reds released him Thursday.
The Marlins were looking for help to back up starter Rob Brantly after Jeff Mathis broke his collarbone.
The 34-year-old Olivo is a .241 career hitter who batted .222 with 12 homers and 29 RBI in 87 games for Seattle last year.
The journeyman has spent time with the Marlins, Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies during his 11-year career.
