The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will induct former linebacker Derrick Brooks into the team’s Ring of Honor and retire his No. 55 at a halftime ceremony during a Sept. 14 game against the St. Louis Rams, the team announced Tuesday.
Brooks will join Hall of Fame defensive end Lee Roy Selmon, former coach John McKay, former Pro Bowl tight end Jimmie Giles, former All-Pro tackle Paul Gruber and Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp in the Ring of Honor.
Brooks’s jersey will be the third retired by the team. Selmon (No. 63) and Sapp (No. 99) are the others.
This summer, Brooks will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He was elected in January during his first year of eligibility.
During a 14-year NFL career, Brooks was part of a Super Bowl championship team and was named to a club-record 11 Pro Bowls. The 2002 NFL Defensive Player of the Year ranks first in team history in tackles with 2,198 and second in games played with 224 and starts with 221. He also finished with 25 interceptions and 13 1/2 sacks.
Brooks remains active in numerous charities throughout the Tampa area.
