Browns scrap white flag promotion

The Cleveland Browns have scrapped a promotional plan to hand out white flag to fans for Sunday’s game against the Steelers, because the flags looked too much like symbols of surrender.

“After further and careful consideration, we felt it was in the best interests of everyone involved that we not have a giveaway item at tomorrow’s game,” the Browns said in a statement, according to NFL.com. “It is something that was intended to be fun for our fans and that they could rally around, and we regret that some didn’t perceive it that way. We want to thank all of our fans for their tremendous support and we look forward to seeing them out in force at the stadium tomorrow.”

The idea was to counter the Terrible Towels that Steelers fans would wave. However, the Browns received a lot of complaints when the idea was announced because of the implications of white flags for a Browns team that is 2-8.
