The Denver Broncos announced on Thursday that they promoted Adam Gase to offensive coordinator.
Gase takes over for Mike McCoy, who took the head coaching job with the San Diego Chargers earlier this week.
Gase moves up from quarterbacks coach, a position he held for the past two years. He has been an assistant with the Broncos for the past four years and in the NFL for eight.
“Adam was an integral part of the success we had offensively this season and was heavily involved in all aspects of our game plan, both during the week and on gameday,” coach John Fox said in a statement. “Maintaining that continuity with our offense was very important in this decision. While we did speak with several qualified candidates, it became clear that Adam was the best fit to be our offensive coordinator.
“His coaching background along with his familiarity with our players is very strong. He did a great job working with Peyton (Manning) and all of our quarterbacks the last two seasons. Adam is a bright coach with a great future, and I am confident he’ll have success in his new role.”
In 2012, the Broncos’ offense was fourth in the NFL with 397.9 yards per game and scored 30.1 points per game. Denver (13-3 in the regular season) was eliminated from the NFC playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens last Saturday.
Gase started his coaching career at LSU in 2000 before taking his first NFL job in the Detroit Lions’ scouting department in 2003. He spent 2005-07 as an assistant coach for the Lions before going to the San Francisco 49ers as an offensive assistant in 2008.
