The Milwaukee Brewers increased their outfield depth Thursday, acquiring Rymer Liriano from the San Diego Padres in exchange for left-hander Trevor Seidenberger.

“He’s going to have to compete for a job,” Brewers GM David Stearns told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel regarding Liriano. “We now have sort of a crowded outfield picture. … He has had some experience at all three outfield spots. We’re eager to see how he adapts to the different positions in spring training.”

Liriano, 24, spent all of last season with Triple-A El Paso, hitting .292 with a .383 on-base percentage, a .460 slugging percentage, 14 homers, 64 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in 131 games.

He appeared in 38 major league games with San Diego in 2014, hitting .220/.289/.266 with one homer and six RBIs.

Seidenberger, 23 went a combined 5-2 with five saves and a 4.07 ERA in 30 relief appearances last year for Double-A Biloxi and high Class A Brevard County. He was the Brewers’ 12th-round draft pick in 2013 out of Texas Christian.

To open a spot for Liriano on the 40-man roster, the Brewers designated outfielder Shane Peterson for assignment.

Peterson, 27, hit .259/.324/.353 with two homers and 16 RBIs in 93 games for Milwaukee last year. His only previous major league experience was two games for Oakland in 2013, when he went 1-for-7.
