SAN FRANCISCO — When you’ve won three championships in five years, you can afford to be patient.
That said, one of the reasons the Giants won a third title last season was the patience of manager Bruce Bochy amid a stretch in which his club was losing 29 of 45 games.
Bochy already has demonstrated 2015 will be no different in terms of his long-range vision. Why else would you sit your best hitter against a pitcher against whom he has gone 4-for-5 with a home run and a double in his career?
On the surface, not starting catcher Buster Posey the day after a shutout defeat, the club’s fourth loss in a row, was a head-scratcher. Unless you understand just how patient Bochy is, that is.
The veteran manager is so intent upon not burning out his star, he’s already scheduled him for a two-day break from catching.

Bochy announced Tuesday that Posey would start at first base in Wednesday’s series finale against the Colorado Rockies.
Wednesday’s move was predictable. Posey usually doesn’t catch right-hander Tim Lincecum.
That’s all the more reason to have expected him to be behind the plate Tuesday.
But that would have been a bit impatient.
