Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson was released by the Buffalo Bills.
Acquired from Seattle during training camp last year, Jackson didn’t see any game action in 2012 while serving as Ryan Fitzpatrick’s backup.
He was expected to compete with free-agent pickup Kevin Kolb until the Bills used a first round pick on EJ Manuel in April. With head coach Doug Marrone praising Manuel’s quick development during the offseason program, it became clear Kolb or Jackson was likely to be the odd-man out.
Releasing Jackson now gives the eighth-year veteran a better opportunity to hook on with another team to compete for a backup job in training camp than he would have received in Buffalo.
Jackson, 30, has played in 51 career games, posting a 77.7 passer rating with 38 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.
