Buffalo Bills running back Karlos Williams was hospitalized on Monday, coach Rex Ryan said, offering no further specifics.

Ryan said Williams, a rookie fifth-round pick who rushed for 40 yards with a touchdown and caught two passes for 23 yards in the Bills’ preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns, woke up in considerable pain.

“Once we find out, you guys will know,” Ryan said Monday. “He woke up in the morning. He felt a little something weight lifting in the afternoon (Sunday). But it wasn’t anything. But now he obviously he had this thing where if you’d touch him … obviously he’s in a lot of pain.”

The Bills are without running back Fred Jackson (hamstring) and Boobie Dixon (calf) because of injuries.
