The Buffalo Bills fired defensive line coach Karl Dunbar on Sunday.

“This was a difficult decision as Karl both played for me and then coached on my staff with two different teams, and I have a great deal of respect for him,” Bills head coach Rex Ryan said in a statement. “But I feel we needed to make a change and go in a different direction at this point in time and so I have informed Karl that I am relieving him of his duties. I want to take this opportunity to thank Karl and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

The 48-year-old Dunbar joined Buffalo last season, following Ryan after being his defensive line coach with the New York Jets from 2012-14.

The Bills finished with the second fewest sacks in the league last season with 21.

It was not immediately clear what the reason is for the odd timing of the move or who Dunbar’s replacement would be.
