Arkansas overconfident?

The Razorbacks had reason to celebrate with its opening 34-14 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette, but coach Bret Bielema doesn’t want them to drop their guard with Samford up next.

The Hogs take on the FCS foe in Little Rock on Saturday.

“One of the things I think we have to do as coaches is constantly remind our guys that you’re only as a good as your last play,” Bielema said. “I do think that was a good team we beat, but at the same account, we’ve got an SEC schedule waiting for us and a Samford team that just beat an FBS team and is going to come into Little Rock with a lot of confidence.”

Samford opened the season with a 31-21 win over Georgia State, which is playing in its first year in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Bulldogs were one of eight FCS teams to notch wins over FBS opponents on the opening week.

The win wasn’t the level of Eastern Washington’s victory over Oregon State or North Dakota State’s over Kansas State, or even McNeese State’s of South Florida.

But it is impressive enough that Bielema wants his players to keep their focus as they rebuild from last year’s 4-8 debacle.

“We’re a work in progress,” he said. “I was excited for that No. 1 thing. The No. 1 thing I loved about Saturday night is sitting back reflecting on the game is to know that what we’ve been preaching and talking about and beating into them definitely came out.”
