Wide receiver Jordan Shipley was released by the Bengals.

The third-year player suffered a season-ending knee injury last September, and had yet to regain his burst despite being cleared to resume practicing July 31.

With several promising young receivers on the team, Shipley was known to be fighting for a roster spot. The team decided to let Shipley go now, and give more playing time to Mohamed Sanu, Marvin Jones, Armon Binns and Brandon Tate, who are battling for spots behind A.J. Green and Andrew Hawkins.

“It’s coming, it’s just got to come quicker,” Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said earlier this week of Shipley. “He’s doing everything right. He’s coming to treatment. He’s working hard. He knows what to do, I think (he) will tell you he’s just not quite there yet. But he’s getting closer. It’s a tough deal for him. I know how good he was and thinks he should be. I know in his mind he’s not quite there but he’s coming along.”

Kicker Thomas Weber was also waived.
