Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones announced via Twitter that he was arrested last week and had planned to turn himself in Monday.

“Just got arrested for protecting myself, I will not let this break me or change what I have work so hard for,” he wrote.

His agent, Peter Schaffer, told NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk that Jones was approached by two intoxicated women at a bar and wanted to take a picture with him. After he declined, one of the women allegedly threw a beer bottle at him. He then reportedly turned around, slapped her in the face and said, “What are you doing? Stop it!”

According to Schaffer, several witnesses support Jones’ side of the incident and that police have only spoken to the two women involved.

“If it was anybody other than Adam Jones, they would have investigated it,” Schaffer said. “If it was anybody other than Adam Jones, they wouldn’t have arrested him.”

Jones had off-the-field legal issues after being drafted in the first round by the Tennessee Titans in 2005. He was suspended for one season after a violent night club incident in 2007.
