The Chicago Bears waived backup quarterback Jimmy Clausen and promoted quarterback David Fales from the practice squad on Monday.
Clausen played in two games this season after starter Jay Cutler injured his hamstring in Week 2, completing 23 of 40 pass attempts for 184 yards and one interception.
“I think, like a big part of our roster, we’re looking at young guys,” coach John Fox said. “We’ll look for a practice squad guy to bring in for the practice squad as we move forward. That’s not been done at this point.”
The 28-year-old Clausen went 9 of 17 for 63 yards in his lone start of the year at Seattle on Sept. 27, a 26-0 loss to the Seahawks.
Clausen, a 2010 second-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers, has passed for 1,967 yards and five touchdowns with 11 interceptions in his career. He has an all-time record of 1-11 as a starter.
Fox said there was outside interest for Fales, who was the Bears’ 2014 sixth-round pick out of San Jose State. To prevent him from signing elsewhere, the Bears had to elevate Fales to the 53-man roster.
Fales, 25, has yet to appear in a regular-season game. In two seasons at San Jose State, Fales made all 25 starts, completing 68.1 percent of his passes for 8,382 yards, 66 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
