The Chicago Bears are expected to sign quarterback Josh McCown with Jay Cutler’s status in doubt because of a concussion, ESPN Chicago reported Monday.
Cutler sustained a concussion after taking a hard hit during the Bears’ 13-6 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday night.
Jason Campbell replaced Cutler for the second half of the game. The Bears will need another backup if Cutler cannot play Nov. 19 at the San Francisco 49ers.
The league announced that the Bears properly followed its protocol in handling Cutler’s concussion. Teams are required to report accurate and timely injury information during games. The Bears announced Cutler’s injury just before the start of the second half.
Cutler will undergo a brain-function test for the concussion, which the NFL has required since 2007.
The Bears cut McCown at the end of the preseason and kept just Cutler and Campbell at quarterback. McCown completed 20 of 29 passes for 157 yards with two touchdowns in the Bears’ final preseason game against the Cleveland Browns.
Chicago also has quarterback Matt Blanchard on its practice squad.
