The Chicago Bears announced Monday that they agreed to a three-year contract extension with wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
Marshall had one year left on his contract. The new deal runs through 2017.
The team did not release financial terms but Marshall announced on Twitter that the extension is worth $30 million.
Since the Bears acquired Marshall in a 2012 trade with the Miami Dolphins, he has made the Pro Bowl both years and combined for 218 catches for 2,803 yards with 23 touchdowns. Marshall ranked in the top five in the NFL in all three categories over that time. His 13 100-yard receiving games in the past two seasons is tied for second in the league.
Marshall’s 118 receptions in 2012 and 100 catches in 2013 rank first and second, respectively, in franchise single-season annals. His 1,508 receiving yards in 2012 and 1,295 receiving yards in 2013 are first and fifth, respectively, in the Bears’ single-season record book.
He is the only player in franchise history with multiple 100-catch seasons and the only one with back-to-back seasons of double-digit touchdown receptions. He is also one of just three players in franchise history with at least 1,000 receiving yards in back-to-back seasons, joining Curtis Conway (1995-96) and Marty Booker (2001-02).
Marshall, a five-time Pro Bowler, was originally a fourth-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos out of Central Florida in 2006. Since then, he is third in the NFL with 712 catches, fifth with 9,050 receiving yards, tied for sixth with 57 touchdown catches and fourth with 32 100-yard receiving games.
Marshall is the only player in the league with 1,000-yards receiving in each of the last seven seasons and with 80 receptions over each of the last seven years. He is tied for the NFL record with five 100-catch seasons and is the first player in league history with 100-reception seasons with two different teams (the Broncos and Bears).
