Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema confirmed on Monday that starting quarterback Joel Stave sustained a broken clavicle in Saturday’s loss to Michigan State and is probably out for the rest of the season.
It possible Stave could return for a bowl game, but it’s unlikely.
“It is probably looking at an eight-week recovery, which takes him out of the regular season,” Bielema said, according to CollegeFootballTalk.com. “He should be 100 percent for spring ball.”
Maryland transfer Danny O’Brien began the season as the Badgers’ starting quarterback, but he was ineffective and was replaced by Stave as the starter.
O’Brien replaced Stave on Saturday after Stave was injured, but O’Brien is not assured of regaining the starting role in Stave’s absence.
Curt Phillips is expected to split practice time with O’Brien during Wisconsin’s bye week, and a decision about the starter will be made next week.
Wisconsin is 6-3 overall, 3-2 in the Big Ten.
