The Houston Astros acquired reliever Ken Giles from the Philadelphia Phillies as part of a seven-player trade Saturday.

Houston also got shortstop Jonathan Arauz in the deal.

In exchange, the Phillies received former No. 1 overall draft pick Mark Appel and fellow pitchers Harold Arauz, Thomas Eshelman, Bret Oberholtzer and Vince Velasquez.

Giles, 25, took over as Phillies closer after Jonathan Papelbon was traded to the Washington Nationals late in the season. Giles had a 1.80 ERA with 87 strikeouts in 70 innings this year. He could end up being the set-up man to Luke Gregerson, who had 31 saves.

Jonathan Arauz, 17, batted .254 with two home runs in 44 rookie league games last summer.

Appel, 24, was the top choice in the 2012 draft. In 253 minor league innings, he has a 5.12 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. He has reached Triple-A.

Velasquez, 23, had a 4.37 ERA in 55 2/3 innings with Houston.

Oberholtzer, 26, has a 3.94 ERA in three seasons with the Astros, including 42 starts.

Eshelman, 21, and Harold Arauz, 20, are not considered top prospects, according to MLB.com. Eshelman was a second-round pick this year and Arauz had a 6.79 ERA over 54 2/3 innings in rookie ball.
