The Oakland Athletics signed utility infielder Nick Punto to a one-year, $3 million contract for next season with a vesting option for 2015, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.

The deal includes a $2.75 million option with a $250,000 buyout for 2015 based on Punto’s ability to stay healthy, CBSSports.com reported.

The 36-year-old veteran batted .255 with two home runs and 21 RBIs in 116 games this past season with the A’s while splitting time between third base, shortstop and second base.

The switch-hitter has played with four teams in the past four seasons. He has a career batting average of .247
