The Oakland Athletics traded shortstop Yunel Escobar to the Washington Nationals for reliever Tyler Clippard, according to multiple reports Wednesday.
The deal is pending the completion of physicals.
The A’s had just acquired the 32-year-old Escobar along with Ben Zobrist in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays last Saturday for John Jaso, Daniel Robertson and Boog Powell.
Clippard posted a 7-5 record with a 2.18 ERA in 70 1/3 innings for the Nationals last season. He has a career 2.88 ERA in 491 innings and posted 32 saves in 2012. The 29-year-old is eligible for free agency after the 2015 season.
Escobar batted .258 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs for Tampa Bay last year. His contract has two years and $13 million in guaranteed money remaining, with a $7 million club option for 2017.
