A’s call up Rodriguez, designate Smith


The Oakland Athletics purchased the contract of right-hander Fernando Rodriguez from Triple-A Nashville and designated Chad Smith for assignment.

Rodriguez, 30, had a 1.00 ERA in nine games with the A’s last season and is 5-13 with a 4.62 ERA in 126 major-league games. He had a 2.81 ERA in 10 games with Nashville this year.

Smith, 25, had a 33.75 ERA in 1 1/3 innings with the A’s this season after being acquired off waivers from the Detroit Tigers in February. He has an 8.31 ERA in 13 career major-league innings.
