A’s are hot, but Coliseum stinks

The Oakland A’s are playing extremely well — they’ve won 22 of their past 29 games — but their building isn’t in the best of shape.

On Sunday, the Oakland and Seattle players both had to shower in the Raiders’ locker room, together, after the A’s 10-2 victory over the Mariners because of flooding on the clubhouse level.

A blocked pipe somewhere on that level led to raw sewage backing up into the showers and bathrooms on the entire level. Damaged areas included both managers’ offices and the umpires room, as well as the Mariners’ training room, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

David Rinetti, the A’s vice president of stadium operations, told the newspaper that such problems are not uncommon at the Coliseum, which was built in 1966, but “never to this extent.”

According to Rinetti, all affected carpeting will be replaced before the team returns for its next homestand on June 24.

Asked about his team’s need for a new stadium, team president Michael Crowley told the Chronicle, “It’s clear, right? This isn’t the first time this has happened.”

Several years ago, the Angels filed a complaint about unsanitary conditions, voicing concerns about E. coli in the training room after similar flooding.
