Alabama freshman quarterback Luke Del Rio, a potential replacement for senior A.J. McCarron, is leaving the program.
Del Rio, the son of Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, tweeted his intentions on Wednesday. ESPN.com reported that Del Rio is considering a transfer to Oregon State.
According to the report, Luke’s father and Oregon State coach Mike Riley are close friends. Riley recruited Luke Del Rio in high school before he decided to walk on at Alabama.
“I had an incredible year at Bama, it’s sad to say that it will be my last, I’m excited for the next chapter of my life and what it will bring,” Del Rio tweeted.
Among the remaining quarterbacks on the Alabama roster are Blake Sims, who was McCarron’s backup this season; redshirt freshman Alec Morris; first-year players Cooper Bateman and Parker McLeod and early enrolling freshman David Cornwell.
The Crimson Tide offense also will have new coaching direction next season after Lane Kiffin was hired to replace offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, who left earlier this month for Michigan.
