Alabama backup quarterback Phillip Ely is set to transfer to Toledo, according to multiple reports.
Ely would sit out the 2013 season and have two years of eligibility remaining. Neither school has confirmed the move, but Ely announced his intentions on Twitter.
“Ready to make a change in my life for the better and I thank everyone who has supported me through this process. Go Rockets!”
Ely sat behind starter A.J. McCarron the past two seasons at Alabama. Last year, he saw minimal playing time, passing for 42 yards and a touchdown. McCarron returns this fall for his senior season.
“I’ve learned so much that I can take with me from my time at Alabama,” Ely said, according to CBSSports.com. “I was a part of a great team. It only betters myself. It’s made me who I am. I can take what I’ve learned and use it at Toledo.”
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Ely chose Toledo over Vanderbilt, Illinois and South Florida, CBSSports.com reported. He is a native of Tampa, Fla.
Toledo finished 9-4 in 2012 during Matt Campbell’s first season as head coach. The Rockets return senior quarterback Terrance Owens in 2013.
