Former Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman weighed in on Jerry Jones comments about Tony Romo possibly replacing rookie Dak Prescott as Cowboys’ quarterback during a Thursday morning radio interview.

“I’m not sure that Tony, if it was left up to the owner, wouldn’t be the starter now, just based on the comments that I’ve heard in the last couple weeks,” Aikman said Thursday morning in an interview with KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket.

“I’m just really dumbfounded by the comments, and not only the first time, but why they continue. I don’t understand why you would talk.”

The Cowboys are 11-2 with Prescott who assumed the starting job when Romo injured his back in preseason.

Prescott has only thrown four interceptions but two were during Sunday night’s 10-7 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. On his radio show Tuesday on KRLD-FM, Jones was asked what it would take for Romo to replace Prescott.

“I don’t have a definition for it, but you’ll know it when you see it,” Jones said. “It’s kind of like a definition I heard one time of another issue trying to define a negative topic, and they said, ‘I don’t know how to say it, but it’s just something that when you see it, you’ll know it’s there.’ We’ll see it.”

Jones also admitted on his radio show this week that Romo getting into a game is a possibility due to injury or ineffective play by Prescott.

“I understand the question, but I don’t want to get into the scenario,” Jones said. “It goes too far into talking about what we don’t want to talk about. But given the need for (Romo), we want him ready on the spur of the moment.”

Jones comments occurred a day after Cowboys coach Jason Garrett ruled out any controversy by saying: “Dak is going to play QB as we go forward”.

The Cowboys have a playoff spot secured and their magic number to clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC is two with three games to play.
