Troy senior running back B.J. Smith is out for the season with a knee injury.
Smith reportedly tore his patellar tendon during the first half of the Trojans’ 47-42 loss to Southern Miss on Saturday, although the school did not confirm the exact nature of the injury.
“His presence will certainly be missed on the football field, but I have no doubt that he will continue to lead by example off the field as he does ‘Whatever It Takes’ to be back next season,” head coach Chip Lindsey said in a statement Tuesday.
Smith rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries in Troy’s season-opening 43-14 win against Campbell on Aug. 31.
Smith was voted the Sun Belt Conference’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 1,186 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2018.
