South Carolina starting running back Mike Davis sat out practice most of the week with injured ribs and coach Steve Spurrier is taking a wait-and-see approach on his status for next Thursday’s opener.
“Mike Davis has been hurt and hasn’t practiced all week,” Spurrier told Sports Talk Radio Network. “I don’t know if he’ll even be able to start.”
Davis, a junior, was second-team All-SEC in 2013 and has 1,458 rushing yards with seven 100-yard rushing games and 11 career starts. Last season, he had 203 carries for 1,183 yards with 11 touchdowns.
Minor injuries have slowed Davis in the past.
His backups are Brandon Wilds and Shon Carson, both juniors.
“We’ve got Brandon Wilds,” said Spurrier. “He’s ready to go. We’re in good shape there.”
