Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday set an NCAA passing record by throwing for 734 yards in the Cougars’ 60-59 loss to California on Saturday night.

Halliday broke the previous FBS record of 716 yards set by Houston’s David Klingler in 1990 and the yardage total was the highest in any game in NCAA history, topping the 730 yards by Old Dominion’s Taylor Heinicke against New Hampshire in 2012.

Halliday moved Washington State into position for a winning 19-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds, but a miss by Quentin Breshears allowed Cal to spoil Halliday’s night.

The national passing leader had 337 yards through the air at halftime and finished with six touchdowns and no interceptions.
