Bowling Green really needed to win its game against Toledo and for most of the game that appeared likely.
The Falcons, with five wins already, would become bowl eligible with a victory over the Rockets in Toledo. With 5:09 remaining in the fourth quarter, they led, 34-21. But, the home team scored back-to-back touchdowns to take a 35-34 lead with under a minute left to play.
That’s when sophomore wide receiver Ta’ron Keith and senior quarterback Matt McDonald took over. McDonald drove the Falcons 72 yards in 38 seconds with the big play a completion to Keith for a 42-yard touchdown with just nine seconds remaining, bringing the score to 40-35. The two players connected on a two-point conversion completion for the final 42-35 margin.
The 42-yard game winner has been chosen as the U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish “Catch of the Week.”
For the game, McDonald completed 18 of 35 passes for a career-high 392 yards and four touchdowns. Keith caught four passes, including the game winner and the two-point conversion.
Bowling Green’s record is now 6-5 … and the Falcons are bowl eligible.
