Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett recovery from a broken ankle is ahead of schedule, which will only complicate things for Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer.
The reigning champs are in the midst of spring practice and Barrett has not missed any reps in 7-on-7 drills, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.
And while Barrett has been limited in practice, he is doing more than what Meyer expected.
“He’s doing more than I thought,” Meyer said Tuesday. But what has really surprised Meyer is the interaction between Barrett, fifth-year senior quarterback Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones, the Buckeyes’ third-string quarterback who led them to the national title.
Miller, Barrett and Jones have bonded and seem to enjoy rooting for each other.
During Tuesday’s practice, Meyer said he saw Miller and Barrett talking football before Miller came over to tap Jones on the head after making a good play.
“That’s not common,” Meyer said. “That’s not common.”
Jones is the only quarterback without limitations this spring. Miller is throwing after re-injuring a shoulder and missing all of last season. He finished ninth in the Heisman Trophy voting two years ago and was one of the top candidates last year before his injury.
Barrett finished fifth in the voting last year.
Ohio State opens its season against Virginia Tech on Sept. 7.
