Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will miss the rest of the season after tearing his right ACL in Saturday’s 27-11 victory against Maryland.
Hoosiers coach Tom Allen confirmed the injury on Monday.
Penix got hurt while scrambling out of bounds inside the Terrapins’ 5-yard line with 4:36 left in the third quarter. He went down awkwardly and immediately clutched his leg.
He was replaced by fellow redshirt sophomore Jack Tuttle, who will start Saturday when the 12th-ranked Hoosiers (5-1) continue the Big Ten season at No. 16 Wisconsin (2-1).
Penix completed just 6 of 19 passes for 84 yards and rushed twice for 29 yards against Maryland. Tuttle was 5-of-5 passing for 31 yards. Neither had a touchdown or interception.
Guiding the Hoosiers to a breakout season, Penix currently leads the Big Ten with 1,645 passing yards and 14 touchdown passes in six games. He has also rushed for two scores.
Penix tore the ACL in the same knee during the 2018 season.
