Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer was informed he would be dismissed following the regular-season finale for the Orange on Saturday.
Syracuse (3-8) is last in yards per play in the Atlantic Coast Conference and after a 3-0 start could finish the season with nine consecutive losses.
There are 13 openings at FBS programs, including schools in which the coach has retired, entering what is the final week of the regular season in many major conferences.
Shafer was hired to replace Doug Marrone and since 2013 has a 13-23 overall record.
The 48-year-old former quarterback at Ohio was defensive coordinator at Michigan in 2008 and then served as an assistant under Marrone.
