Florida State and Mississippi will open the 2016 season at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla., ESPN reported Thursday.

The game is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 5, 2016.

The stadium’s $207 million reconstruction is expected to be completed this month.

Florida State and Ole Miss have met only once before, and the Rebels won that 1961 meeting 33-0.

Florida State is ranked No. 3 and Mississippi is No. 10 in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings, although whether they will both be top-10 teams entering the 2016 season is anyone’s guess.

Early-season nonconference games between high-profile opponents on a neutral field has become commonplace in college football.

Kansas City is scheduled to host a game between Missouri and BYU on Nov. 14, 2015, at Arrowhead Stadium.
