Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Percy Harvin, who suffered a concussion during last week’s victory over the New Orleans Saints, will not play in the NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Friday.
“He will not make it back for this game,” Carroll said. “He did not make it through the concussion protocol. I’m super disappointed for Percy. I know how much he wants to play.”
Harvin suffered the concussion while trying to make a catch in the end zone during the first half last week and did not return to the game. It was only the second game he played this season.
—Cleveland Browns wide receiver Davone Bess was arrested for assaulting an officer/firefighter on Friday morning, South Florida TV station WBFS reported.
The arrest comes a day after he posted an image on Twitter of what appeared to be marijuana, indicating he was watching “Cocaine Cowboys,” a program about illegal drug use in the 1980s, and wrote the message “We da real dons!” The photo was later deleted.
—The Houston Texans have agreed to hire Romeo Crennel as their new defensive coordinator, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Crennel, who was out of the NFL this past season after being fired as the Kansas City Chiefs head coach following the 2012 season, met with new Texans head coach Bill O’Brien about the position a week ago.
Crennel will officially replace Wade Phillips as Texans defensive coordinator next week, according to the report.
—Hall of Famer Joe Montana told USA Today that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has room to improve.
“I like his mobility and that he’s getting the ball downfield,” Montana said. “But sometimes he needs to be more accurate in the pocket with pressure.
“The game is changing. Nobody wants to throw with pressure anymore. But the guys who can win in this league are the ones who can make throws from the pocket.”
—The Washington Redskins named Wes Phillips as tight ends coach, and retained offensive line coach Chris Foerster and defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, the team announced.
—The Green Bay Packers announced that outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene resigned.
“I am stepping away from the NFL at this time in order to spend more time with my wife, Tara, and our children, Gavin and Gabrielle,” Greene said in a statement released by the team. “I will miss coaching and will try to return after our kids move on to college if a team will have me.”
—New England Patriots rookie wide receivers Aaron Dobson (foot) and Kenbrell Thompkins (hip/concussion) and Punter Ryan Allen (shoulder) were listed as questionable on Friday for the AFC Championship Game against Denver on Sunday.
