The Oakland Athletics reached agreement with relief pitcher Jim Johnson on a one-year, $10 million contract, according to reports on Thursday.
The right-hander and the A’s avoided arbitration before he enters his first season in Oakland. The A’s acquired the closer in a trade in December with the Baltimore Orioles.
Johnson is coming off two straight 50-save seasons, but last year he also blew an American League-leading nine save opportunities while posting a 2.94 ERA.
The one-year contract would make the 30-year-old the third highest paid reliever in baseball, trailing only Jonathan Papelbon ($13 million) and Rafael Soriano ($11 million).
